There has been a marked decrease in the 2016-2017 leek harvest due to a decrease in acreage and flooding in the North over the spring. Both production and acreage have fallen by 3% and the harvest is expected to reach 159,300 tons, according to Agreste.
However, in the West, despite an 8% decrease in acreage, production has increased by 4%. The same trend has been remarked on a smaller scale in the Centre-West where acreage has decreased by 2% but harvest is up 3%. Meanwhile, production has plummeted in the North by 10%, mainly due to flooding over the spring.
Despite a reduced supply in September, prices remained above the five year average at the start of the season. In October, they increased alongside the seasonal increase in demand. Prices are now 6% higher than in 2015-2016 and 34% above the five year average.
