"Chile: "First nectarine shipments to China due in December"

With the Chilean nectarine campaign about to begin, preparations are underway for the first shipments to China. "We have good prospects for our fruit, which has reached good calibres and acquired the right colour. Also, despite the frosts we suffered during the spring, we are not having problems with the volumes; in fact, given the enthusiasm that producers have had since the opening of the Chinese market, we are sure to achieve a greater export volume of white pulp nectarines," affirmed Felipe Rieutord, of Triofrut.

Since it is the first year that the Chilean fruit will enter the Chinese market, it will mainly be the white pulp nectarine that will see its volumes driven. It is estimated that, this campaign, a total of 1 million boxes may be exported to this destination.

"It will be a very high figure, because we have never shipped there before and it is a very interesting market. Our only possible competitor would be Australia, but they start earlier than us, so we will only compete directly with them for a few weeks," highlighted Rieutord.

On 25 October, Carlos Furche, Minister of Agriculture of Chile, announced that after three years of negotiations with China, Chile would start exporting nectarines to this market. "Since we heard the deal would be signed, we started negotiating with clients. The first shipments should be made in late December, as the strategy is for them to arrive at their destination before the Chinese New Year. Although cherries are the most important product in this period, we believe that our nectarines will be very well accepted," concluded the representative.
