Final preparations underway for Egyptian citrus

Exactly two days from now, Egypt will restart the new citrus season. December 1 was the date set by the government to make it sure that they will have the right coloration of the citrus.

According to CEO, Ahmed Abdelhady, of Citrozone, “For our company, we will start with Navels where we are expecting a slight shortage due to the weather. Its quality is like the previous one, nothing peculiar this new season. We have mostly big sizes. There is enough from sizes 36, 42, 48 and 56, which are the ones normally demanded in the Scandinavian market. We have new customers from Sweden and Finland and we hope the fruits will arrive before Christmas, as the prices for everything will then be very high and demand is very good.”

Given Scandinavia’s preferences, their focus is on the Eastern European market, as the Navel, “is a sensitive product, and it is possible to ship the fruit from Alexandria to countries like Poland or the Czech Republic in just 6 days without any quality problems.”

In global terms, countries in the Far East, like India, Indonesia or Singapore, normally prefer smaller sizes, while Scandinavia demands the bigger ones. Suppliers are aware of this and try to meet the demands. “The card we can play against Spanish citrus is the price, as the shipment to Scandinavia is cheaper for us, so although prices will be slightly higher this campaign, Egyptian citrus still has better opportunities there.”

The fact that Citrozone has an office in the Netherlands is another important advantage. Since, they are able to control the fruits by themselves and solve any problems,” concludes Abdelhady.
