Jan van der Ben, G. Sevenhuysen:

“Fears for the second half of onion season”

Although large volumes of onions have been exported in recent weeks, Jan van der Ben, from G. Sevenhuysen, has his heart in his mouth for the second half of the season. “Africa has been a large buyer, but there are rumours that Senegal will limit imports earlier this season, to protect local production. I do not see many possibilities if that is the case.”

“Up till now, boats have regularly sailed to Africa, but a large part of that will stop in the near future. Some onions are still being sent to the Caribbean, but not enough to cover necessary sales volumes. It has been very calm from Brazil, and destinations such as the Middle East and Dubai get most of their onions from Spain. They are at a similar price level, but just look better. And we can also forget about the Eastern bloc, because Poland has had a significant harvest,” Van der Ben continues.

“I hear from sorting companies that they could practically sort blindfolded, because there are hardly any bad onions, but that also means tare percentage will be considerably lower. I fear we will have an onion surplus. Bale prices are dropping somewhat already, it is around 18 cents per bale now, but you can also buy them for 17 cents already. The market is already being pressured now, and I fear that the onion market will collapse.”
