The weather during the vegetation period had a decisive influence on the current crop quantity. Thus, extensive phases of vegetation development were characterised by high temperatures in combination with an almost extreme dryness.
The potato yield amounts to 333.5 decitonnes per hectare (dt/ha) in 2016. A low yield was last reported in 2010. At the same time, the grubbing up this year amounted to 9 percent below the long term average (2010 - 2015: 367.6 dt/ha).
The farmers who were able to use sprinklers for their potato fields in 2016 clearly had an advantage. This measure proved to be particularly benificial in areas with lighter soil. Irrigation yields of 387.0 dt/ha were cleared, which was much higher than the yield in areas without irrigation (287.6 dt/ha).
