Pasec sees growth opportunities for the second hand market

Production of wooden paloxes has decreased significantly

“Every summer we make pallet boxes (cubic containers) for fruit producers. This is a seasonal business, because these containers are only used intensively for a few months every year. We noticed that the production has decreased during the past few years. Ten years ago, we made about 15,000 containers per year, now, it is somewhere between 8,000 and 10,000 crates. Especially since 2014, there has been a significant decrease in the demand due to the Russian boycott,” says Jens Cocquet, account manager of Pasec Ltd., part of Pooling Partners. Pooling Partners is the market leader in Europe in terms of integrated, full-service pooling services, and production of wooden pallets and containers.

The Dutch family business offers three kinds of pooling networks, Ipp Logipal, PAKi Logistics, and PRS Return System. Click here to read more about these networks.

Hub
Several European production companies are part of the Faber Halbertsma Group/Pooling Partners, including the Belgian company Pasec, an organization that joined the group in 1986. “Every establishment has its own specialty. Pasec is the largest end most modern company in terms of wooden packaging in the Benelux. Our 140 employees produce more than 3.5 million pallets, chests, crates, and cable drums every year. We supply new as well as second hand products. The wood that we buy comes from economically responsible forestry. For every tree that we use, several new trees are planted. Besides, we are a reparation hub in the Benelux, and we gather, sort, repair, and supply these pallets,” Bruno Deracourt, general manager, explains. “The products that we supply to the fruit sector are just a small part of all our activities. We keep on spreading our activities over multiple branches, to exclude risks. The fruit sector often has problems and is dependent on many different things. Fortunately, this has no direct influence on our business.”

No growth in fruit cultivation
According to Jens, the Russian boycott is not the only reason for the decrease in demand. “The fruit producers state that mainly the competition for apples has increased. They are also pressured financially. There are issues going on that we cannot influence. We do not expect that this market will grow fast in the coming years. Besides, there is also competition for us, in other countries these cubic crates are created cheaper and there are also plastic pallet boxes.” Another supplier of the group that supplies agriculture boxes is Naus Kisten and Pallets Ltd. “We supply mainly to the fruit sector and they supply mainly to the agricultural sector, including potato and vegetable producers.”

Growth in second hand market
Bruno expects the coming years to show a growth in several departments of Pasec. “In pallets as well as crates, we are counting on a growth. Additionally, we think that the largest growth will be in the ‘reparation’ department, or the second hand market. More and more customers choose for reparation instead of new products because of their cost management. We will be specializing ourselves more in this department.”
