New large logistics center for fruit and vegetables operational in 2017

Breaking ground for new Landgard location in Berbersdorf, Germany

After an intensive planning process, Landgard started the construction of their new, state-of-the-art fruit and vegetable center in Berbersdorf, Saxony. On 15 November 2016, the breaking of ground ceremony took place at the new location. The participation of numerous representatives in this ceremony showed the importance of Landgard, not only for Berbersdorf, but also for the entire region.

The construction at this new location is the first major construction project after the successful reorganization of Landgard. The operator of the fresh logistics center will be Landgard Fruit & Vegetables Chemnitz-Dresden. The manager Jens Pawlik appreciates the location and the opportunities offered by the new logistics center. He states: “With the building of the new logistics center, we are responding to the increased demand for company surface in the region. The current locations in Chemnitz and Dresden operate at their maximum capacity. On the new Berbersdorf site, we gain in efficiency; the size of the site makes it possible to run a packing services multi-center in addition to a logistics hub. This way we can offer our customers services that are even more purposeful and tailor-made.”

The new Landgard location covers about 8 hectare, and in the first phase, around 10,000 square meters of halls are to be built. Approximately 125 employees will be employed in Berbersdorf, in addition to the existing employee pool in the locations in Chemnitz and Dresden, 20 to 25 new jobs will be created.

In his speech the Chairman of the Board of Landgard Armin Rehberg welcomed the decision of the Berbersdorf-Striegistal municipality to invest in the development of the site. “As a modern and successful marketing cooperative, we are committed to a long-term, future-oriented development and we need an excellent infrastructure at our sites to achieve this. The area in Berbersdorf fulfills our location requirements and offers the best conditions for success.”

Armin Rehberg emphasized that the Berbersdorf location will play an important role in the strategic development of the Landgard Group. “We sell products of regional, national and international origin to our customers in retail, supermarkets, wholesale and discount sectors. Landgard Chemnitz-Dresden already is a market-leading, full-range center for fruit and vegetables in eastern Germany. At this new location we will continue the internationalization, and we will combine all activities related to the purchase of products from Asia. Furthermore we are consistently trying to expand our organization with producers from this part of Germany."

In the future Landgard will offer, from the Berbersdorf location, an excellent centrally located warehouse, flexible logistics of fresh produce, a variety of packing services and professional quality management. “For us, as a service provider, that offers extra value to our customers and associates. The development of this new location is an important strategic step towards the future,” continues Armin Rehberg.

LIST Bau Bielefeld is responsible for the construction of the new building. The contractor started with the construction on site four weeks ago. Since the start, the cut and fill method has been used in earthworks. All the excavated material is reused elsewhere in the build, this way large amounts of construction materials don’t have to be transported or removed. After the completion of the earthworks, extensive preparation work will be carried out until the end of the year. And in January the progress will be really visible, because from then on the building will go upward and onward almost every day. The structural building work will be complete after about four months. The building will be handed over to Landgard and the operations will start in the middle of 2017.
