Competition heating up in leeks
A healthy supply of leeks this year has led in part to a lower drop in prices for the vegetable. “Supply is good and it is coming from all across the United States right now,” says Brian Peixoto for Lakeside Organic Gardens based in Watsonville, CA. “But prices are definitely lower than in years past, probably by about $4-$6 thanks to more competition. The competition is coming from the Pacific Northwest.”
Across multiple markets
Leeks, a popular vegetable throughout Thanksgiving to Christmas thanks to its appearance on holiday tables, are seeing a surge in competition notes Peixoto. “The competition out there is the biggest challenge for us,” he says. “It’s increasing and it’s all across the markets. Everyone thinks they can make more money growing organics and they can’t. It’s all the big companies.”
Extended product line
Leeks are one of the products Lakeside provided to Ocean Mist Farms as a part of its strategic alliance formed last year with the company. While Lakeside provided it and other vegetables including beets, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, cilantro, fennel and more to Ocean Mist, Lakeside expanded its product list with the addition of organic artichokes from Ocean Mist.
