China: Spring onion prices back to normal

The harvesting season for spring onion has recently started again. In sharp contrast to last year, when spring onion fever pushed prices through the roof, prices on early markets are dropping in response to a healthy supply. Last year's boom convinced more farmers to turn over their fields to spring onion production and the resulting bumper crop has had its usual effect. 

Quality has also been affected by the poor management practices of the new entrants and this has had a further, predictable effect on sales and prices. And, as long as supply continues to outstrip demand, we are unlikely to see a change in this trend in the near future.
