Italy: How to keep down the costs of building a processing facility

Cimbali Coperture s.r.l. was established in 2010 but the founders (Cesare Cimbali with his sons Thomas and Sergio) had already been operating in the cover and warehouse sector for many years. In particular, they built insulated steel structures for the processing of fruit and vegetable products.

Cesare, who is an industrial designer, has been collaborating with companies that build industrial warehouses and greenhouses since the 1980s.

The buildings have a steel structure covered with sandwich panels and are generating quite a lot of interest because, unlike classic reinforced concrete structures, they are 30-40% cheaper.

These buildings are minimal yet flexible and comply with the needs of territories at high seismic risk. They also have an excellent resistance to fire.

The Company guarantees customised design and production - clients are not tied to standard models and can choose whatever shape and size they need. In addition, insulated panels represent the latest introduction in the building sector and are produced in compliance with European specifications. They need in fact to pass specific tests in order to be used, such as:
  • mechanical and static resistance;
  • safety of employment;
  • safety in case of a fire;
  • environmental impact;
  • insulation (thermal and acoustic);
  • energy saving.
The company is rather versatile and also builds sport facilities and elegant covers for tourist facilities and private homes..

The structures are made of galvanised steel, covered with high-tenacity polyester, coated PVC and lacquered fabrics that are easier to clean and last longer.

Cimbali Srl also designs and manufactures tools for the construction of greenhouses. In particular, it manufactures a specific 'device for the safe tensioning of plastic films' (aka "Cricchetto Tommy") made up of a fixed and a mobile (even motorised) part that can automate film laying and removal operations.

"They idea stemmed from the fact that greenhouse plastic films must be replaced every 1 or 2 years. Studies conducted on tensioning operations showed that the risk for operators is high, for what concerns both falls and collisions with the equipment," explains administrator Adriana Lo Monaco.

"Tools are often built to the indications provided by operators and are not safe. In addition, other risks are represented by the high torques necessary to tension plastic films, the elastic response of the films used and the often defective stop devices."

But how does this device work? "At least 4 'Crichetto Tommy' are used per greenhouse, one ever 50 metres. They are equipped with a locking system to avoid elastic responses as well as a system that locks tensioned films in place. Our devices are made up of: ultra-compact motor, reducer, remotes and a torque limiter. Operators therefore work at a distance, avoiding risks."

Who invented it and how did you develop it?
 "Thomas had the idea, which was then verified by the GeSA department, Mechanics section of the University of Catania and CRA – ING in Treviglio. We then took part in an ENAMA public tender for the concession of contributions for the development of innovative mechanisation ideas."

Cimbali Coperture is also involved with recreational projects for children. Recently, it attended the Emaia fair in Vittoria where, in addition to displaying its own products, it presented the 'Colora Bobò' (Colour in Bobò) initiative. Bobò is a dinosaur entirely made of material destined for greenhouse construction and was coloured in by many children aged 3 to 8.

"The initiative was dedicated to the memory of my husband Thomas Cimbali to celebrate the enthusiasm with which he lived both his work and private life."
