Costa Rican pineapple growers strengthen responsible production

Through a strategic cooperation agreement involving the institutions of the agricultural sector, academia along with producers and their organizations, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock promotes the Iniciativa Nacional para la Sostenibilidad Piñera, which includes the dissemination of environmentally responsible production practices, as well as more research and adopting measures to address climate change, and higher levels of dialogue and transparency between the productive sector and populations living with the crop. 
 
As a background to this initiative, the Plataforma Nacional de Producción y Comercialización Responsable de la Piña, must assume a work plan towards regulating the sector, and creating a monitoring committee for these actions. 
 
"Among other actions, the State, through its institutions, and with support from academia and the production sector, promote the analysis of potential suitable areas for cultivation; the use of better soil and water conservation practices for; managing crop residues and pesticides; integrated pest management; mitigation measures and adaptation of pineapple production to climate change; a development plan of small and medium enterprises in the organic sector; and the development of a seal that allows the differentiation of Costa Rican pineapple in international markets and increase the competitiveness of our producers, "explained the deputy minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Ivannia Quesada Villalobos, coordinator of the initiative.
