"A series of preliminary steps preceded the agreement. It is quite an ambitious project, through which we wish to give an identity to the product focusing on its Italian origin."
As we all know, avocados have been doing rather well over the past few years thanks to their nutritional properties. At the moment, however, most volumes are imported. Sicilia Avocado is one of the few Italian companies that cultivates the fruit on the domestic territory.
"After assessing the excellent organoleptic qualities of Sicilian avocados, Spreafico immediately supported it. We will grow the fruit, while Sprefico will commercialise it on the domestic market. This project is only at the beginning, but it is a confirmation of the fact that we have worked well and managed to make people see Sicilian avocados are just as good as imported ones."
Italian avocados are available between late September and April. Sicilia Avocado grows multiple varieties including Fuerte, Reed and Hass. The company will be in charge of checks, electronic grading, packaging and delivery within 30/36 hours from harvesting (road transport).
For what concerns the possibility of distributing the produce via retailers, Passanisi says that it will depend on the farsightedness of operators willing to take a bet on domestic production to meet new customer demands. "There is definitely room for Italian avocados, also because of their compliance with high quality and food security standards."
