Michoacan is the biggest exporter of mango in Mexico; this year it exported more than 83,350 tons of mango to destinations like the United States, Canada, Asia, and Europe. According to the Secretary of Rural Development and Agricultural Food (Sedrua), Francisco Huergo Maurin, this year's total production was estimated at 145,000 tons.
Huergo Maurin said that 2016 had been a good year for Michoacan's mango sector because they had exported 24,800 more tons than last year.
According to him, production in 2015 had amounted to 135,000 tons, 58,500 of which were exported. He also clarified that, despite being the biggest exporter of mangos, Michoacan ranked fifth as a producer.
He also said that Michoacan had approximately 20,000 hectares planted with mangoes; 3,250 hectares of which are used to produce organic mango and there were 1,200 hectares in the process of being certified as organic gardens.
The 20,000 hectares of mango production generate 1,600,000 working wages. This crop is very important as a generator of jobs in the state.
The mango from Michoacan is grown in 29 municipalities, including: Gabriel Zamora, Mújica, New Urecho, Parácuaro, Tepalcatepec, Apatzingan, Aquila, Aguililla, and Lazaro Cardenas, among others.
Huergo Maurin stated that the mango sector was one of the most important and crucial sectors in the state. In this regard, he said, producers and authorities will continue working on the fruit's health and safety to increase exports and to consolidate their first place ranking regarding mango exports.
Finally, he stated that this sector had over 3,200 hectares with Global-Gap certification; which guarantees they can export the fruit to the most demanding markets in the world, as they are certified by an international quality seal.
