Sicilian organic lemons now available on the market

Lemons from southern Italy are about to become available. Daniele Di Mauro is an operator from Sicily with a stand in Cesena's wholesale market.

"We sell organic lemons cultivated on our family's land near Siracusa. Organic produce is very popular and that is why it is sold at a few cents more than the traditional one. Production is looking good, although it is just the beginning." Last week, organic lemons were sold at €1.60/kg,

"My policy is to maintain prices more or less constant throughout the year, and clients appreciate it."

"Femminello siracusano is popular, mainly for its intense fragrance. As it is organic, it is also perfect for all those recipes and dishes that require the peel."

"It is a juicy lemon with a thin peel, which our clients appreciate. We mainly sell to wholesalers and restauranteurs, but we also carry out home deliveries to different areas."

"We are a family business. In Sicily, my wife's family - F.lli Sampugnaro - owns 50 hectares of citrus groves. My family owns around 20 hectares."

The company only cultivates the Femminello variety. In addition, they grow Nova clementines as well as Navel, Tarocco, Tarocco-Mele and Moro oranges. During a normal year, they sell around 3,000 tons of citrus fruit, but "we are expencting a 40% drop this year due to the high temperatures during blossoming."
