China: Production of honey oranges down

30% less production

"The new production season of the honey orange has already started and it will keep going until the end of January next year. Because of low temperatures in the beginning of the year and dry weather in the later phases of the cultivation, the overall production volume of honey oranges in the Yunnan district is greatly reduced, down 30% on last year. Furthermore, it is estimated that the market price during this production season will drop by 20% to 30%. Of course, the production season has only just started, changes in both directions are possible, so it is too early to draw final conclusions," says Ms. Liu Yanchen from Mile Yixiang Agriculture Technology.

Product quality influences price
"Contrary to the expectations and hopes of a large number of farmers, the reduction of the supply hasn't resulted in a higher price. This is because of several reasons. I personally believe that the frequent rain has had a bad influence on the quality and taste of the honey oranges. As a result, not only are the sales volumes not as people expected, but it has also drained away the desire of consumers to buy the oranges."

"The company was founded in 2010. It is located in one of China's production regions for honey oranges, Yunnan. It is a large-scale cultivation and sales company for high-quality honey oranges. In the current year, the yearly production volume is around 1000 tons of oranges, registered as the brand 'Yiguo'. We posses 333 hectares of cultivation ground, of which some 27 hectares are reserved for the cultivation of grapes. Additionally, the company also cooperates closely with local collectives, so the total surface that is managed is around 67 hectares. In the process of cultivation, a method is adopted of combining organic fertiliser with the waste of the farmers."

"The honey oranges we produce are currently sold all over China, but the sales are mainly directed towards the wholesale markets of Beijing, Guangxi, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Kunming, Gansu and Henan. When the opportunity arises, we would also like to make an entrance in the export market. That way we could work together with foreigners to introduce the special Chinese honey oranges to the international market."
