Low cost bananas more popular than famous brands
"It is quite a weird season. Volumes are constant but sales are slow so prices are dropping. 18 kg boxes are sold at €20 for Chiquita and at €13/14 for other brands, while they were sold at €21/21.5 and 15/16 in the past few weeks," reports a wholesaler operating in Bologna.

"Another thing that is weird is the fact that less popular brands are selling more than the famous ones, such as Chiquite or Del Monte."
"Prices hover around €1.15/kg for Chiquita bananas, €1/kg for Del Monte bananas and 85 eurocent/kg for other brands. Despite the drop in sales, though, importer prices are not decreasing."
