Onions from Rio Negro had a good return

The onion season brought more than $2 million to the town of Lamarque, in the department of Avellaneda, Rio Negro, where there is a facility to produce and package onions. As a result, mayor Sergio Hernandez met with businessmen in recent days to promote garlic production.

According to data from the municipality, 70 people worked in the facility and packaged more than 181,000 bags of onions, which were worth $15 each, during the season.

"The Cooperation Consortium from the Middle Valley, which is composed of the Municipality and the Chamber of Producers, is responsible for operating that shed," the municipality stated. In that regard, Hernandez thanked the people who participated in it. "We would like to thank you very much for trusting us with this challenge and for ensuring more jobs for the town," he said.

After paying wages, supplies and the facility's maintenance, the mayor estimated they would have $300,000 to $400,000 that could be used to build the new warehouse to produce and pack garlic.
