Spain: Banana imports up in August

In August 2016, the Canary Islands shipped 23,076 tonnes of bananas to mainland Spain, while imports from Africa and Latin America amounted to 20,702 tonnes and re-exports reached 7,170 tonnes, so Spanish consumers had access to about 36,608 tonnes of bananas. This is around 2,470 tonnes more than in the previous month, representing an increase of 7.2%. With these figures, the market share of imported bananas in Spain has fluctuated between a minimum of 37% and a maximum of 57%.

The main suppliers of imported bananas in August were Ivory Coast, with 5,002 tonnes, Costa Rica, with 4,365 tonnes, Colombia, with 3,687 tonnes, and Cameroon, with 2,978 tonnes, which together accounted for 77% of the total volume. Moreover, Ivory Coast, with 3.2 million Euro, Costa Rica, with 2.2 million Euro, Colombia, with 2.1 million and Cameroon, with 1.7 million Euro, were the main suppliers in terms of value, accounting for about 78% of the total.

So far in 2016, shipments from the Canary Islands have exceeded 253,616 tonnes, imports from Africa and Latin America have stood at 188,011 tonnes and re-exports have reached 44,286 tonnes, so the available supply has amounted to 397,341 tonnes, 63,809 more than in the same period of 2015. Their market share has fluctuated between a minimum of 36% and a maximum of 47%.

The main suppliers of imported bananas so far this year are: Costa Rica, with 47,972 tonnes, Ivory Coast, with 46,289 tonnes and Colombia, with 25,069 tonnes, which together account for 63% of the total volume. Moreover, Ivory Coast, with 28.7 million Euro, Costa Rica, with 23.8 million and Colombia, with 14.1 million Euro, were the leading suppliers in terms of value, accounting for almost 63% of the total.
