Australian mangoes growing well, good season anticipated

“This is our third season of importing and selling Australian mangoes here in the U.S.,” said Robert Schueller of Melissa’s. “Our season begins on October 25th. The Australian desert has the ideal temperatures and humidity that mangoes need. Our farms are located below the equator, which really helps the flavor profile of our mangoes. The flavor is sweet and really smooth. Because they are fiberless, you won’t get what I call “mango mouth,” which just means getting all those fibers stuck in between your teeth. These mangoes are much easier to cut because the pit is so much smaller. It also means there’s more fruit under the skin,” added Schueller.

“We’ll be bringing four varieties in, beginning with the Kingston Pride and R2E2, beginning on November first. Then, we’ll bring in the Honey Pride in late November. Finally, the Keitt variety starts up in late January or early February. Kingston Pride and R2E2 continue until early January and the Honey gold continues through February. Finally, the Keitt will continue through March,” said Schueller.

“The weather conditions have been ideal for our mangoes. We’ve had no bad weather, excessive rain or floods, so our growing season has been going really well,” Schueller said. “We’ll begin with light volume, then move into the peak of our season. Our mangoes will be readily available in late November and early December into January, then begin petering out in early March.”
