Arturo Medina, of ProHass:

"In 2017, we'll have a quality seal for our avocados"

Peru closed the avocado campaign with 176,000 tonnes exported. Shipments have gone mostly to Europe (70%) and the US (20%), and the rest to other destinations. These figures show that the European market has consolidated as the main importer of Peruvian avocados.

"While Europe is our main consumer, demand from the United States is growing every year. In any case, we firmly believe that expanding our destinations is the most appropriate strategy. China, for example, is an interesting market for all fruits and vegetables, as it has enormous potential because of its steady growth in terms of consumption, and this is where we want to consolidate. If we get 1% of the Chinese to consume avocados, it would be a big step," states Arturo Medina, of ProHass.

The fruit is progressively becoming a part of the diet of consumers and the challenge set by Peruvian producers to promote its consumption goes along with this trend. Medina affirms that "avocado is a healthy food and its qualities are helping boost consumption. The options for consumers are endless. Traditionally, the fruit was consumed only for breakfast and salads, but it has now become an ingredient for numerous haute cuisine recipes, ice cream and smoothies. And it is worth noting that when consumers go to the supermarket, they do not look for a brand or specific country; only for a fruit that is creamy and delicious. These qualities are only achieved when the fruit has been harvested at the right time."

To strengthen the quality of Peruvian avocados, ProHass has prepared various actions, with the main one being the creation of a quality seal, which would ensure that the avocados shipped meet high quality standards and the requirements demanded by consumers in the destination countries. "Next year, we will finish the process that will make it possible for the quality seal to come into force, thus ensuring that our avocados have been harvested with a minimum of 23% of dry matter. 70% of producers nationwide are associated with ProHass, so we would cover most of the Peruvian production," affirmed the spokesperson.

ProHass is the Peruvian association that took the initiative to create the WAO (World Avocado Organization), which will bring avocado producing countries together in their efforts to carry out global campaigns in order to encourage the fruit's consumption.
