"There's a craze for subtropicals all over the world"

Spanish avocado campaign kicks off with very high prices

The harvest season has already kicked off for green skin avocados of the Bacon and Fuerte varieties in the Axarquia and the Costa Tropical, and it won't be until late November, when the first Hass (the most planted variety in Spain), will start being harvested. In the whole of Spain, a harvest of around 70,000 tonnes is expected.

"Right now, we are already marketing our green skin Bacon avocados, which we ship mainly to the UK and Eastern European countries," states Álvaro Martínez, manager of Axarfruit. "Although these avocados have their markets, they are not as representative as the Hass, and they are mostly used to pollinate and protect Hass avocados from the wind," he adds.

The producer expects more volume, better quality and larger calibres for their avocados compared to the previous season. "We are very excited about the Spanish avocado campaign."

According to Álvaro MartÍnez, the markets are eager to start working with Spanish avocados, as the prices of overseas avocados are very high at the moment; so much so, that a box of organic avocados costs between 16 and 17 Euro. "Prices have remained very high throughout most of the year, although they are expected to fall slightly in the coming weeks. Spanish avocados have a better quality because of the geographical proximity and they are also cheaper," he points out.

"Avocados are a fashionable fruit; there's a craze for subtropicals all over the world. Demand is growing at exponential levels, outstripping supply, which has led us to double the turnover compared to last year. We are very happy; we don't know yet where the ceiling is for this sector."
