Heavy competition for Florida cucumbers
This time of the year, Georgia and Florida produce cucumbers domestically. “In Florida, we started harvesting about ten days ago,” says Michael Yates with Pexco Produce Sales. “Volumes are still light, but we should start to see an increase as of next week.” Production will continue until mid-December.
Honduran supplies
Typically, Florida doesn’t grow many cucumbers in the fall as competition is heavy from other growing regions. “We are fighting with Mexico and Georgia is in production until mid-November,” shared Yates. “Georgia is producing heavily right now,” he added. Demand is also slower in fall than in spring. By mid-December, Honduran cucumbers will enter the US market. “There is so much volume from Honduras coming in these days that we want to be done by the time they become available,” mentioned Yates.
Prices are in the mid to high teens and Yates expects them to stay there until the harvest finishes. It’s a fair price given the competition and factoring in that demand is always slower in fall than in spring. This week in particular is very slow due to Columbus Day and the fact that many people from the industry were out of the office for the PMA Fresh Summit.
