Carlos Madariaga, Berries Paradise:

"Mexico: "We want to establish ourselves in Dubai"

Dubai is a market which doesn't seem to stop growing, and the company, Berries Paradise, of Mexico, has also decided to start exporting its products there.

The company hopes to make its first shipment to Dubai on 16 October, reaching its destination three days later. 70% of the exports will consist of raspberries and the other 30% of blackberries, both conventional, according to Carlos Madariaga, of Berries Paradise.

Positioning of the company
"Our goal is to launch the brand Berries Paradise in Dubai, promoting the excellent quality and service we provide so that, later, with the support and development of strategic customers, we can position ourselves in Dubai as one of the best and most reliable berry suppliers," explains Madariaga, adding that the company had been planning to enter the Dubai market for some time, but preferred to find excellent contacts to be able to build long-term relationships.

Its products will be exported by air from Guadalajara via Europe, with a transit time of three days. Given the shelf life of berries, the exporter acknowledges that this is a long journey, but possible if the fruits are of good quality, the best transport routes are used and the cold chain is protected at all times.

Madariaga explains that the Dubai market does not require special packaging, but "conventional packaging and 12 x 125 g and 12 x 170 g presentations."

Competition
Although Mexico faces plenty of competition, since it is not the only country exporting berries to Dubai, Madariaga believes it has the potential to ship 20 tonnes per week in the short or medium term, taking blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and strawberries into account.

Dubai is reputed to be a difficult market, and it is also easy to lose because of the high quality demanded, even though it pays well. But Madariaga believes that there is a misperception of this market. "In fact, prices are not high, since Dubai is a market that is accessible for many producing countries, which results in great competition and competitive prices almost all year round."

"Our expectations are very positive, as we believe we have adequate contacts and the right channels to develop an excellent promotional campaign for Berries Paradise, which will also prove beneficial for our customers," he concludes.
