Mexico: Avocado from Michoacan gets ready for the US

After two weeks of conflict in Michoacán, the region's avocado producers and the State Government agreed on a series of measures that will allow producers to cut and export their fruit.

Israel Tenory Garcia, head of the Ministry of Rural Development and Food Industry, reached an agreement with the Association of Avocado Producers and Packers of Michoacan to avoid affecting the export of fruit to the United States, which mainly consumes Hass avocado.

Part of the agreement includes analyzing the possibility of giving credentials to the representatives of the packaging sector and managing the security of the stationery with electronic locks.

They also agreed to create a committee of producers and directors of the association, to meet with staff of the USDA in order to implement the Binational Plan, according to the established statutes.

Mainly, he said, they want to review, with the USDA, the biometric samples that the Unit of Verification collects to review, to see if the weight of the avocado, that is discounted from the producers, must be adjusted.

Nearly 1,300 producers of avocado in Jalisco are ready to begin exporting to the United States, said Gustavo Jimenez Aguayo, head of the Directorate of Planning from Rural Development.

Jalisco has 11.958 hectares that have been certified because they are free of pests, which is one of the main requirements to be able to export to United States.

The producers from Jalisco already export avocado to several countries in Europe and in Asia, and are planning to sell some 70,000 tons of avocado to the United States.
