Mexico: Avocado harvesting resumes

APEAM (Avocado Producers and Exporting Packers Association of Mexico) is pleased to confirm that harvesting has resumed in Mexico, with more than 1,000 picking crews currently back in the fields. APEAM projects that 40 million pounds of avocados will be shipped to the U.S. market this week, followed by strong, steady volumes moving forward to help offset the temporary product shortage caused by a work stoppage over the last couple of weeks.

The interruption in harvesting was driven by internal industry issues that have been addressed with mediation by the Michoacán State Government and the Mexican Department of Agriculture (SAGARPA). The primary issue revolved around sales negotiations between the growers and packers. It is important to note that these issues do not fall within APEAM’s purview, as APEAM has no role in the private negotiations between growers and packers. However, APEAM has been using its influence to promote dialogue and agreement between the parties.

Throughout this process, APEAM has asked importers and retailers for their understanding and patience, and the support has been greatly appreciated. For over 19 years, the supply of Avocados From Mexico to the U.S. market has been consistent and timely with good, reliable quality. This strong foundation has led to one of the most successful promotion programs in the fresh produce industry in recent years. APEAM has always and will continue working to support its industry partners, according to plans for the season, crop estimates and general weekly forecasts. The U.S. marketing team will continue implementing innovative, year-round programs to drive excitement and purchase for the Avocados From Mexico brand that also fuel category growth.
