The company Van Straalen De Vries Transport has about 220 lorries driving around the Netherlands, doing everything from shop distribution to flower and plant transportation. Since this summer, the company also has a branch in Valencia, Spain. Jan Gerrit Slot, who lives in Spain, was asked to start the branch there. “I expect half of our activities will consist of the transport of fresh produce.”
“In addition to the fruit and vegetable transport, we will also drive for industry. We can provide both complete loads and groupage, and we also offer storage, transfer and cross docking activities,” Slot says. “Belgium and the Netherlands will be the most important markets for the fresh produce transport, but we will also drive throughout Spain. After all, the challenge is to have work throughout the year. The Spanish fruit export has eight busy months, and four quiet ones, that is why we try to have something to do year-round.”
According to Slot, customers see it as an advantage to work with a transportation company instead of a transport agency. “That is because we have our own lorries driving around, allowing us to offer continuity, even in less busy periods. That is why certain bigger customers do not even get into business with agencies,” he says. Slot is looking forward to the new fruit and vegetable season. “We have recently been busy with the administrative process of starting the branch, but now we can really get going.”
