Unfavourable marketing year

Mexico: Sinaloa closes its mango campaign with 44,000 tons

Sinaloa's mango production sector obtained encouraging results, as they achieved an export volume of 44,000 tons, but had an unfavourable marketing year as the product's price was depressed during most of the season.

Daniel Ibarra Heredia, president of the Association of Mango Exporting Producers in the zone that is free of fruit fly, said the harvest cycle came to an end during the first week of October and that, subsequently, mango packers, operating in the north, had concluded activities for this year.

Production
He said that by the end of the crop cycle, fruit exports directed toward the United States had amounted to 44,000 tons, 8,000 tons more than the 36,000 tons exported in the previous season.

He said production had been good this year, but that the market had been disappointing because of the oversupply of product throughout most of the year.

Market
He said that producers in the north usually enjoy a small market window to the United States during September, which allowed them to place a good part of their production and achieve good prices; unfortunately, they didn't have it this year because there was so much product coming from Escuinapa and later from Brazil.

Fortunately, he said, there was no fruit left in the orchards, as this would have negatively impacted the sector, drastically affecting producers.

Ibarra Heredia said that what happened this year had made them think that, perhaps, producers are already producing enough product to supply the needs of the market; something they must consider as there are still producers that are interested in establishing new orchards, and many young orchards that will increase the production in the next few years, which could have a negative impact on the market.
