Slight increase in port fees

The number of ESI-certified ships is rising

While in 2016 the port fees didn’t increase, the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) will raise the port fee rate by 0.9% for the majority of their operations in 2017. “Our policy sends a clear signal to shipping companies and port industries. It is our goal to ensure that Hamburg remains attractive as a port of call,” states Tino Klemm, Director of Finance and Property and Member of the HPA Management Board.

During the pending decision process, regarding the adjustment of the ship canal, the reductions for particularly large vessels and transshipment will be continued. However, this discount will be reduced by increasing the cap. This will take pressure off the shipping companies and is unique compared to other competitor ports.

The five environmental discounts (ESI-, LNG-, port power-, Green Award- and Blue Angel discount) remain an incentive for environmental-friendly and clean vessels. The increased use of the Environmental Ship Index Environmental discount (ESI), clearly demonstrates the positive response to the incentives. More than 4,000 ships are currently ESI-certified and their number is still rising. About 50 ports and related businesses in Europe, America, Asia and Oceania contributed to advance these developments. Recent numbers show that over 18% of all calls made to the Port of Hamburg were cleaner than the regulations required.
