“The pear industry has unlimited potential and is ripe for a revolution,” Amit Dhingra recently blogged on the Good Fruit Grower website.
He makes a convincing argument that the pear industry in essence has a perception problem and needs to get the proper attention.
“If the industry could address the main issues with pears, namely providing a convenient and easy way to consume them while on the go and producing a more consistent flavour profile, why couldn’t they have the same revolution that other, less appealing crops have had?”
At Interpera 2016, the international pear industry will spotlight these and other questions.
• Future scenarios for SA and the global perspective including Brexit
• Breeding for the future
• Consumer preferences
• Panorama of the world production of pears with a focus on the production areas, economic aspects, varieties, main technical issues
• Focus on Southern Hemisphere pear production
• Technical innovation (new varieties, rootstocks, and production systems,) with researchers, technical advisers and producers of various countries trends, traditional and new markets, pest management and residues of pesticides, trade barriers, and new club varieties).
