Mexico: Oaxaca exports 32,000 tons of mango to the US and Canada

The delegate of the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food, (SAGARPA), Lino Velázquez Morales, stated that by the end of the export season, Oaxaca had shipped approximately 32,000 tons of mangos to the United States, Canada, and, experimentally, to Europe.

Compared to 2016 there was an increase in the production's value and income, losses were down and product quality improved.

This is the result of the phytosanitary measures, implemented by SAGARPA through the National Campaign Against Fruit Flies, which decreased pest numbers and allowed producers to have a good harvest and a quality suitable for export.

The mango packing facilities, which are geared up for export to the US and Canada, are located In the eastern region of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.

The eastern region of the Isthmus, in Oaxaca, is the "mango capital" and ships the fruit nationwide. It has about 25,000 hectares, registered and certified by the Ministry of Agriculture.

Municipalities in Chahuites, San Pedro Tapanatepec, Zanatepec, Reforma de Pineda and San Francisco Ixhuatán, pack mangoes varieties for export, such as the Tommy, Ataulfo, and Gold varieties. Mango production is the main economic activity in this area of Oaxaca, generating thousands of direct and indirect jobs.
