Seedless grapes increasingly popular

The Italian table grape sector is set to change with the introduction of more and more seedless varieties, so producers need to adapt. This is what emerged during a convention held at Fruit Attraction. Professor Carlo Fideghessli and Sun World manager, Maurizio Ventura, also took part.

"Consumers are preferring seedless grapes whether we like it or not. Northern Europe and the UK have already shifted to these varieties and, as soon as Germany goes the same way, it will be hard for traditional grapes," explained Ventura.

During Grape Attraction, strategies to increase consumption were also discussed. For example, why is there no sales assistant for fruit and vegetables in supermarkets? Sales would increase if there was one.

In addition, a 130 gram service size should also be introduced. A resealable packet with pre-washed grapes, ideal to take to school or to the office.

Carlo Fideghelli

Professor Fideghelli, President of the Technical and Scientific Committee of Rete Italian Variety Club (IVC), explained how cooperation between the private and public sector has led to a project for the development of mainly seedless grape varieties.

"Each territory is different, so we need to analyse plant response. The cooperation of the productive, commercial and nursery worlds, with the help of the Universities of Bari and Catania, and of Crsfa Basile Caramia, can result in the creation of royalty-free varieties, suitable for various climates and locations."
