Kenyans demand land from Fresh Del Monte

In Kenya, Fresh Del Monte and the local population of the region Kandara in Murang’a, are diametrically opposed to each other. At the start of this month, the population presented a petition which asked for land to be returned by Fresh Del Monte.

Del Monte has been active in the country for about 50 years, and leases about 12,000 hectares of land for the cultivation of pineapple. In the petition, the population demands that a part of that area is released for public use. Furthermore, the population reproaches the multinational that they do not benefit from Del Monte’s presence.

In the document, more than 2,400 hectares is claimed on which the community wants to build hospitals, vocational training colleges and industrial zones. The 7,000 jobs Fresh Del Monte has in the area, are generally filled by people from outside the region.
