Honduran banana exports grew by 2.7% in volume

Honduran banana export revenues increased by 7%, due to an increase in prices and a 2.8% increase in the export volume within the first seven months of 2016, stated the Central Bank of the country.

Honduras exported a total of 19,342 eighteen-kilo boxes of bananas between January and July, 2.8% more than the 18,823 boxes it exported in the same period of 2015, according to a report by Honduras Central Bank (BCH).

Banana sales during the reference period totaled 294.1 million dollars, i.e. 7% more than the 274.8 million dollars achieved in the same period last year, stated the document.

According to the Central Bank, the increase is do to a 4.% rise in prices and an increase in demand from international markets.

In the first seven months of this year the price of a box of bananas averaged 15.20 dollars, while in the same period of 2015 it averaged 14.60 dollars, which represents a 4.2% increase in prices, the Central Bank stated.

The BCH stated that the United States and Ireland were the main destinations for Honduran banana exports, but they did not specify the volume shipped to these destinations.

According to official data, Honduran banana exports in 2015 amounted to 505 million dollars.
