Popular apple variety to feature at PMA Fresh Summit

Opal®, the highly-acclaimed apple creating a frenzy in the category, will make its first appearance of the new season at PMA Fresh Summit October 14-16 in Orlando, Fla.

The consumer favorite boasts a bright yellow exterior, incredibly sweet flavor and distinctive crunch. The apple is naturally non-browning, making it perfect for snacks, salads and lunchboxes. Show attendees can experience the Opal for themselves at booth #1578 and taste the difference.

“Consumers expect a variety of tastes from their apples, and the demand for our unique varieties – like Opal® – continues to grow year after year,” said Chuck Zeutenhorst, general manager of FirstFruits. “We’re excited to deliver an amazing eating experience to consumers and see promotional opportunities nationwide beginning with our increased 2016 crop production.”

FirstFruits represents Broetje Orchards, a leader in Washington organic apple production and an innovator in new varieties to the market, as well as Congdon Orchards. As the exclusive marketer of the Opal®, FirstFruits will offer the variety in both organic and conventional options beginning in mid-October and expects supplies to last through May 2017.

Opal apples are supported at retail through a comprehensive marketing plan including point-of-sale materials, merchandising bins, produce manager education, social media content and a consumer advertising and public relations campaign.
