Panama: The IMA has not complied with the purchase of onion

Producers from the Highlands stated on Thursday that the Institute of Agricultural Marketing (IMA) had not completed the purchase of 10,000 pounds of onions, which it had promised, to help them solve the marketing problem they face because of onion imports.

"The IMA has only purchased 3,000 pounds of onions, so producers continue to have about 7,000 quintals of product that will be lost in storage," said Augusto Jimenez, president of the Association of Producers from the Highlands.

He also said that the Government had shown little interest in solving the problem caused by imports, which affects the ability of domestic producers to market their product, and leads to a decrease in production.

He maintained that the onion produced in Chiriqui was of high quality and that they risked losing it because the authorities were doing nothing to control imports.
