Organic cultivation and processing

China: Export of late season Keitt mangoes

Huaping County in Lijiang, Yunnan province, is the most northern place for late season mangoes. It is the most optimal in terms of natural conditions and cultivation procedures for late-ripe mangoes and this brings a clear advantage on the market.

"At present, the cultivation surface for our organic mangoes is over 333 hectares. We mainly cultivate middle and late-ripe varieties. Generally we start harvesting the local varieties from late June. After that, the other varieties can be supplied all the way to October. Our annual production volume is about 5000 tons," says Mr. Zou Jie, CEO of Lijiang Huaping Gold Mango Ecological Development.

Currently we are still supplying Keitt mangoes

"In terms of cultivation, we formulated mango industry standards in cooperation with the fruit research centre in Jinan. After that we used the advanced technology of the research centre to establish a standardised cultivation system that meets the quality demands. We also invested a lot of money to build a standardised factory with a surface of 16850 square meters. Here we select mangoes, package them and process them further. This way we satisfy the varying demands of different market segments."

Unified sales
Following the interest of online shops, the sales of fresh fruit is no longer limited to wholesale or retail stores. Through the internet, Wechat also becomes a contact point with consumers. It becomes an important channel for promotion.

"Our online sales channel is mostly in Beijing, Shanghai, Canton and other first tier cities. We also opened an online shop under the Gold Mango brand and carefully select mangoes from the Diluo production field for online services. At the same time we also built our own quality inspection centre, the i-OID up-chain tracing platform, and a logistics and sales system. We created the Huaping mango brand and promoted sales, especially in the peak season. It can help us to solve the mango sales problem of some 13000 hectares in Huaping. It helps to raise the income of the farmers effectively."

Developing further processing for export
"In 2015, we invested 120 million RMB to build a mango paste production line. Every year we process 15000 tons of mangoes, which enables us to produce 7500 tons of mango paste. The expenditure on the production line may be large, but we believe that processing the mangoes opens up a series of mango products. Not only does it bring added value for the late-ripe mangoes, but it can also increase our resilience against fluctuations of the market capacity. The shelf life of fresh mangoes is pretty short. If the market demand shrinks, we can stimulate the mango sales through further processing. This is an important guaranteed income for the farmers.

"Our mango paste production line is already operational. Our mango paste, dried mango and other processed articles can, we hope, be exported this year to the Philippines, Malaysia and other South-East Asian countries. We hope that even more Huaping mangoes will go beyond China in the future, so that they may be enjoyed all over the world."
