Coopabando produces bananas under brand Ban Amour

“Caribbean bananas are sweeter and more flavourful”

According to José Bernard of Coopabando from the Dominican Republic, Caribbean bananas are the best in the world. “They are sweeter and more flavourful,” is his conviction. “Additionally, they have the perfect size. BanAmour bananas have a unique flavour that is recognisable to all of its devotees.”

Coopabando was founded in 2009, and is a cooperative aimed at both production and export of bananas. Bernard is commercial manager of Coopabando and he explains that they produce organic bananas under brand BanAmour.

European customers
“At first we worked a lot with partners from France, and from there, our bananas went to various European countries. Currently, our largest trading partner is Spain, and they supply the bananas to countries including France, Italy, Sweden and Germany. We see demand increasing most in France. We are a unique organisation in the Dominican Republic, because we are in charge of both our own cultivation and export.”

Export
“Cultivators who are members of Coopabando, are located in the Valverde Mao province, in the northwest of the Dominican Republic. Here, we have a good climate for producing organic bananas. 30 cultivators are members, and they produce on an area of about 350 hectares.” Coopabando is organic, GlobalGAP and fairtrade certified. “In order to allow our exports to increase in coming years, we have also started sourcing from local producers and the future cultivation of other products, including mangoes, pineapple and ginger is in train” Bernard concludes. “In that way, we can become better-known with other fruits as well.”
