Italy: upgrade only solution to protect table grapes in future

After the abnormal wave of bad weather that hit the Apulian region and affected most of the table grape production, the entrepreneur Nicola Giuliano of Giuliano Puglia Fruit commented: "Damage estimates or calls for help after the heavy losses are not a solution. The only prospect is to adapt the implantations to a changing climate."

"That's basically what we did always; 30 years ago we had nothing to defend our vineyards. Then we introduced nets, cloths and a combination of roofing systems. Today we must act in the same direction. There are ideas, but they will be applied and tested, especially in a historical moment in which Apulia is renewing its varietal park, bridging the gap in cultivation and marketing of seedless grapes. Then, it is important for leading companies such as ours, to give a good example - launching a pilot implantation and testing new breeding techniques and vineyard protection from abnormal weather waves like the last one."

Nicola Giuliano underlines how important it is for the table grape sector to not lose produce during the harvesting season: "Unlike other fruit crops, substantial production costs are necessary, for table grapes, in the pre-harvest stage- estimated at around 15-20 thousand euro per hectare."

The company was founded in 2000 to pursue and develop the commitment of the Giuliano's brothers in the fruit and vegetable sector. The company is located in the countryside of Turi, in a region specialised in agriculture. The manufacturing facilities are spread over a total covered area of 70,000 sq. metres.

Part of the marketed production comes from family farms, located in suitable areas and strategic parts of Puglia, which allow you to have availability of early maturing and late. Nearly 1,000 hectares of grapes, peaches, melons, apricots, citrus fruits and vegetables, certified according to standards of good agricultural practices "Global GAP" and "Nurture".
