Colombia: Exotic fruits have a future in agribusiness

The world's growing market for exotic and tropical fruits represents an opportunity for the country's producers, not only to increase crops, but also to diversify them.

On September 24, the the National Unified Corporation for Higher Education (CUN), will conduct a free of charge training activity, called the Agribusiness' Fruit Aroma, in the municipality of Sierra Quipile - Cundinamarca. The activity will be attended by more than 100 producers of blackberry, pomegranate, and lulo who are interested in seeing, first hand, the different processes that make pulps, dehydrate fruits, and make jams.

Oscar Escobar Pardo, the National Director of the Agribusiness Administration Programme at the CUN, said it was important to create links between the government, the productive entities, and the businesses to support farmers so the sector can achieve sustained growth. Additionally, he said they needed to strengthen the marketing network by training them in Good Agricultural and Good Manufacturing Practices.

The activity will also allow the agricultural industry students of the CUN to recognize the main aspects related to the agricultural production of fruit trees as raw material for the agricultural industry, and how to create added-value products.
