UK salad market reaps benefits of extended summer

The UK salad market has been reaping the benefits of an extended summer, the unseasonably warm September has meant more sunshine hours and warm nights increasing both consumption and production.

"It has been a really interesting year," according to Anthony Gardiner, Marketing Director at G's Fresh. "Generally supply has been able to meet demand as the better weather brought on crops, but it will be interesting to see what happens from here. We will soon move onto Spanish supply, but have a few more weeks of UK crop left."

It has been a challenging growing year, for growers though, as its been hot when it should have been cooler, and cold when it should have been warm and there has been a lot of rain, June especially was incredibly wet.

"We continue to see growth in the Gem lettuce variety however, however the retail price point drop v’s two years ago in Iceberg has moved a lot of consumers towards that product explains Anthony. "The added value market is doing well at the moment especially items such as salad bowls."

The fresh cut salad range, fresh & naked from G's has performed well over the summer and has seen growth in both Tesco and Ocado. "We launched a couple of new lines under the brand this summer," says Anthony. "A Super Food Mix, with Pea Shoots, Baby Kale & Spinach and Spicy Mixed Leaves with Wasabi Rocket, Mustard, Rocket & Bulls Blood, both of which lines have been sold exclusively in Tesco UK”
