"There is much talk about how fast the kaki acreage is expanding and about a possible overproduction in the near future... And it's true, maybe we're going too fast, but for now, the demand unquestionably absorbs the available supply," explains Daniel Vidal addressing the expected increase in production.
As for the greater volume of medium and small sizes this year, Daniel Vidal considers it a commercial advantage. "Last year, the kakis were too large and it was difficult to sell them in the absence of the Russian market, which used to absorb much of those volumes. Germany, the main consumer of kakis right now, mainly demands medium calibres due to the fact that they are sold by units and not by kilos. Most supermarket chains prefer medium calibres on their shelves, presented in baskets, so this year sales will be easier in this regard."
Exquisite Fruits ships its kakis mainly to retail chains in Germany, Switzerland and Eastern European countries, such as Slovenia, Belarus and Ukraine, among others.
"Two seasons ago, we started doing business in the UAE, where our shipments arrive by air and by sea, departing from the Port of Valencia. It is a very interesting market considering that it is a hub for much of the Middle East; our goods are redirected from there to Saudi Arabia and Jordan. We believe this may become a good alternative to Russia, although it is not an easy market, as it is very demanding and there is much competition with fruit from other origins. Moreover, we are beginning to do tests in order to ship to other distant markets, such as Canada, Singapore or Hong Kong," affirms the exporter.
In addition to its export activity, the Valencian company wants to continue gaining ground on the domestic market. According to Daniel Vidal, "in Spain, kakis still have the handicap of being associated with the old soft kakis, which could be consumed with a spoon. Consumers are still unfamiliar with this new way of growing kakis, whose consistency resembles that of an apple. We believe that kakis have a long road ahead in Spain, as they are still not widely known outside Valencia. The strategy will be to work with supermarket chains in order to conduct promotions in retail outlets."
Exquisite Fruits seeks to differentiate itself in the presentation of its products. "In order to stand out from the competition, we believe we must always strive to give added value to our customers. We are committed to surprising them with new presentations, original and unique packaging formats, such as Christmas baskets, small boxes, etc. Innovation is essential in this sector."

Exhibitors at Fruit Attraction for the first time
"Traditionally, we have always exhibited in Berlin, and we attended Madrid each year as visitors, but we found that suppliers are more often found in Madrid, as it coincides with the time when the campaigns start. I have to admit that the organisers of Fruit Attraction are doing a good job, because it is growing tremendously. We have invested in a large booth where we will showcase seasonal kakis and where we expect to welcome our clients and have the opportunity to open new trade routes. Now is the best time."
