The potato market has been stuck at a tough price level for weeks. “The cultivation costs of strains such as Eigenheimer, Bildstar and Doré are around 30 cents, and Frieslanders are being sold for a price between 22 and 24 cents. That is quite a lot of money for this time of year. I think it is surprising that the price remains at this level, because I think we, and surrounding countries, have many more potatoes for sale than everyone thinks,” responds Felix Molenaar of potato and vegetable wholesaler Molenaar.
Molenaar characterises the potato market as lazy and expensive. “Far-off export is not going well because our potatoes are too expensive, and the market for small packages and table potatoes was just plain bad last month. Potato consumption is also just much lower when the weather is good. I therefore expect prices to drop a bit, maybe not in the short term, but in the coming months, at least. Yields are slightly less for us, but surrounding countries have more potatoes. That cancels each other out quite fairly. But I am not a prophet, and the winter harvest still has to be brought in. Much will depend on how the potatoes arrive.”
