Karlsruhe, Germany:

European asparagus and soft fruit farmers meet at expoSE and expoDirekt

On 16 and 17 November 2016, the 21st European Asparagus and Strawberry Trade Fair (expoSE) and the 6th Exhibition for agricultural direct selling (expoDirekt) will attract over 6,000 visitors from all over the world.

During Europe’s leading trade fair in this sector, over 400 international exhibitors will present current information about their new products and services in Karlsruhe. “The two intensive exhibition days are important moments to meet and a perfect professional platform to exchange knowledge. The interest of German and foreign visitors and exhibitors in the trade fair increases every year,” states the organiser Simon Schumacher of the Verband Süddeutscher Spargel- ind Erdbeeranbauer (the Association of Southern German asparagus and strawberry growers, VSSE).

The trade fair will be opened on 16 November at 10:00 am, by junior minister of agriculture of Baden-Württemberg Gurr-Hirsch, together with several asparagus and soft fruit “royals” from all over Germany. After the opening the VSSE will present the Innovation Awards 2016 to the six most innovative companies in the sector. Visitors can receive free information about recent findings, in research, advice and from the field - on the first day at the “Spargeltag” and on the second day during the direct selling forum.

Due to the extreme weather during the last season fruit and vegetables farmers all over Europe had to cope with significant challenges. Simon Schumacher explains the main theme of the trade fair: “The heavy rain, cold weather and heat waves in 2016 probably accelerated the trend towards the specialisation of production. For many companies, continued investments to move harvesting dates forward and in crop protection methods as well as the reduction of personnel costs through technology and digitisation, are important adjustable variables."

Direct selling can be an important sales method especially in periods with large quantities and low prices. The expoDirekt Fair provides numerous ideas for attractive extra ranges. to bind customers who buy their produce directly from the farm. About 90 exhibitors will present (especially for farms) adapted solutions such as product presentation, packaging, storage, cooling, IT and personnel.
