Organic and PDO products performing well at Eurocitrus OP

Production, processing and markets
"Società Cooperativa Agricola OP Eurocitrus" is located in the foothills of Mount Etna and has thirty years of experience in the fresh produce trade, with over 900 partners. The main products are different varieties of citrus fruit (Moro, Tarocco, Sanguinello, Navelina and Valencia), prickly pears, olives, peaches, apricots, cantaloupe melons and oregano.

Everything is collected by a processing facility in Catania covering 15,000 sq m and equipped with cold storage units. It can process over 200 tons of produce every day.

The products are then sent to domestic and foreign markets (Germany, France, Belgium, Switzerland and Netherlands) to be distributed through traditional channels (e.g. wholesale markets) and supermarket chains such as Esselunga, Pam Panorama and Lidl.

Eurocitrus OP is a partner of the "Arancia Rossa di Sicilia" PGI consortium and holds the GlobalGAP and Grasp certifications. The entire prickly pear production is PDO and also holds the UNI ISO 9001/2000 certification. Citrus fruit, prickly pears and oregano are certified organic.

An assessment of 2015
Both the turnover and the customer base have increased during the last campaign, in line with the past few years. In particular, people showed a lot of interest in organic and PDO products. Eurocitrus alone represented over 50% of the PDO products released on the market as compliant produce.

Challenges/Objectives for 2016
Communication and marketing manager Carmelo Danzì explains that "while public institutions must provide coordination, the private sector must work as a system to take advantage of the opportunities. We believe we also have a social role to raise awareness about the difficulties of the chain. We are also proud to be part of the first prickly pear chain in Sicily."
