Germany:
Apple harvest begins in Lake Constance region
In the next few days the apple harvest starts again in fruit growing regions around Lake Constance.
An exact starting date can’t be defined, because the different varieties ripen at different times, states Bernhard Fuchs the spokesperson for the distributor SeeFrucht.
The harvest of the early varieties such as the Delbarestival apple is almost over. The harvest of commercially more important varieties, for instance Estar and Gala apples, starts in the next few days. "Some farmers are already harvesting."
Overall, the farmers expect a good harvest, continues Bernhard Fuchs. It is difficult to give an accurate forecast at the start of the harvest. There are locations that had to cope with hail and frost. And, according to Bernhard Fuchs that is the reason why the harvest of Jonagold apples might be somewhat lower than the yield of the previous year.
Lake Constance is, together with the 'Alten Land' in Hamburg and Lower Saxony, one of the main areas for the production of apples in Germany.
