Canada: Good first results with new heat-resistant heirlooms

Just about a year ago, Turkish seed breeder Yuksel started its North American branch with the opening of its premises in Kingsville, Ontario. After a year of extensive trials and translating their experience towards their research programs, the breeder looks back at a positive first year.

In the first year, Yuksel introduced many new heirloom tomato varieties. Ziya Yildiz informed us that there was a triple success for heirloom beef tomatoes Quesimodo, Stealth and Tourmaline. "These have proven that they can stand the heat on the continent. They have proven to be well balanced varieties with a steady behaviour throughout the hot weather. All three of them were strong enough to withstand the heat."

Quasimodo

Ziya said that Yuksel's new variety Quasimodo is a strong, vegetative crop with an early production. "The fruits are about 250-300 grams and very firm. The crop is know for a great setting throughout the season and produces wonderful red ribbed fruits."

Stealth

Stealth is Yuksel's latest new commercial variety. "Again a strong vegetative plant with an early production", said Ziya. "The deep ribbed brown fruits have an average weight of 250-300 grams. The crop guarantees a great setting in all seasons."

Tourmaline

Tourmaline is a very strong and vegetative heirloom variety with a great setting throughout the season."It produces bright pink, ribbed fruits that weight 280-350 grams.''

According to Ziya, these three strong heirloom varieties are just a few of the hidden gems within the Yuksel catalog. "We have more varieties available that have proven they can stand the heat, from a wide selection of tomatoes, to peppers, cucumbers, eggplants, muskmelon and squash.''
