Packaged fruit more popular than loose

According to the Confcooperative processing of Euromonitor data, the per capita consumption of fresh fruit has increased worldwide. Germany seems to be in line with this trend as, between 2010 and 2015, the fresh fruit market there saw a 3.2% increase. In 2012, consumption was at 4.1 million ton, while it rose by 150 thousand tons the following year and has remained constant ever since.

This positive trend was supported mainly by table grape and kiwifruit consumption, followed by that of bananas, blueberries and cherries. All fresh fruit categories experienced this trend except for pomegranates, pomelos, citrus fruit (excluding lemons and limes), pineapples and plums.

Between 2010 and 2015, the most popular fruit seemed to be apples (25.9%), followed by bananas (20.3%) and then, at a distance, oranges, clementines and tangerines, table grapes and peaches.

Estimates predict that, between 2015 and 2020, consumption should rise from 4.2 million tons to 4.4 million, especially because of the increase in the consumption of blueberries, kiwifruit and exotic fruit.

Comparing the Italian market to the German one, we can see that, in the former, people tend to prefer loose fruit, while in Germany 57% of the fruit sold is packaged and only 43% is loose.
