Valencia's citrus sector expects a normal production this campaign, recovering the volumes that were lost last year (over 30%) due to the impact of heat waves, frost and hailstorms.
"Given the good flowering of the first mandarin and clementine varieties, we expect a good, quality production within schedule," explains Alejandro Peiró, manager of Peiró Camaró.
According to the producer and exporter, "while in the past we preferred starting the campaign earlier with extra-early Satsuma varieties, such as the Iwasaki, we decided to begin a little later with clementine varieties like the Oronules and Orogrande."
Drought has been, perhaps, the only handicap this campaign. "It has been a very dry year and, overall, this has taken a toll on the calibres, which will be smaller in the main producing areas. Fortunately, we have been able to apply the necessary irrigation in the more than 300 hectares of our own production," affirms Alejandro Peiró.
