15% less apples in Val Venosta due to April frost

The new Italian apple season is now starting. Gala apples are being harvested in Val Venosta by VI.P., while the harvesting of Golden Delicious will start in late September.

Quantities should be lower than last year. "Around 15% lower for all varieties because of the frost in April," explains VI.P. director Josef Wielander. Expectations talked about a 3% drop in production in the whole of Alto Adige, although it looks like the figure will be higher in Val Venosta.

Once harvested, the apples will be processed and placed on the market to guarantee regular supplies over 12 months.

Josef Wielander, VI.P. director

Despite the increase in cultivated surfaces, a drop in production is also expected for club varieties. "Volumes should be in line with last year for Ambrosia®, Envy® and Kanzi®. The harvesting of Ambrosia® will start in late September, that of Kanzi® will start in early October and that of Envy® will start in late October," explains Wielander.

Gala already has a good colour, while we will have to wait a while for Golden because "everything depends on the last few days. If September continues with such hot days and cool nights, then quality will be perfect and with an excellent colour. The only problem will be the grades, as we will have less 80/85 apples and more 70/75 and 75/80 apples. This is also true for other varieties."
