Mexico: The first shipment of asparagus from Durango departs to the US

Authorities from the three levels of government were present at a ceremony to export the first shipment of asparagus harvested in the municipalities of Durango to the United States. The ceremony was held in Durango and was also assisted by producers from Nuevo Ideal, Canatlan, Poanas, Vicente Guerrero, and Durango.

The ceremony was was hosted by mayor Manolo Avila Galindo, and headed by Francisco Gamboa Barron, who was representing Governor Jorge Herrera Caldera, and the state delegate of the SGARPA, MVZ Tomas Fernando Castillo.

"Today we are witnessing the shipment of the 2016 harvest of the project to produce and market green asparagus from the state of Durango. Today we see the result of the effort that was undertaken by producers and marketers to cultivate a crop with the high performance and productivity reconversion."

In an interview at the end of the ceremony, Bautista Hernandez, representative of the SULKEN company, which promoted this project, said they were going to export 62 tons of asparagus this year. He also said there were 240 hectares devoted to this crop in the state of Durango, 170 of which were in the municipality of Nuevo Ideal, and the rest in towns like Canatlan.

The 62 tons that will be exported this year were produced in 52 hectares. Bautista Hernandez also said that the 30-pound box of asparagus would be marketed at $31 dollars.
